Understanding the Sources of Credit Reporting Errors
Credit reporting agencies — the most prominent of which are Experian, Equifax and TransUnion — are responsible for providing accurate information about your credit history to prospective lenders, employers and other authorized users. However, many credit reports contain errors such as:
- Inaccurate delinquency reports: Your credit report says that you are behind on a debt that you are actually up to date on, or that you paid off.
- Multiple listings: The same debt is listed more than once on your credit report, making it look like you owe more than you actually do.
- Impermissible access: Someone pulled your credit report without authorization, making it look like you've applied for credit more often that you actually have.
- Social Security number mix-ups: Someone else's credit information is on your credit report. This problem, known as a "mismerged" report, is often caused by two individuals having similar Social Security numbers
All of these things can hurt your credit score, making it more difficult for you to get a car loan, mortgage or other type of loan and potentially increasing your interest rates on new debt.
