Chronic fatigue syndrome is a medical condition that causes persistent fatigue, even in people who have not exerted themselves and have gotten plenty of rest. Additional symptoms include:
- Lack of stamina
- Flu-like symptoms
- Memory and concentration difficulties
- Muscle and joint pain
- Severe headaches
- Depression
The medical community is not sure what causes chronic fatigue syndrome. It was originally thought to be related to the Epstein-Barr virus and mononucleosis, but now doctors are not so sure. The symptoms may resemble those of fibromyalgia, lupus or multiple sclerosis.
Because chronic fatigue syndrome is so hard to pin down, different doctors and patient organizations have different names for the disease and criteria for diagnosing it. But CFS is widely recognized as a disease, and if you have it, you may qualify for disability benefits.
